Karen & Cindy
July 18, 2024

The West Flint Optimist Club gathered for its July 18th meeting with a modest turnout of eleven members and two guests. This lower attendance was likely due to the recent two-week break and the change in meeting location. As a reminder, our meetings are now held at Liberty Restaurant on Pierson Road at Luce Road in Flushing, promptly at 7:30 AM every Thursday.

Thank You Notes and Donations

Karen Lorenc expressed her gratitude to the club, circulating a thank you note for the donation made to the Flushing Christian Outreach Center. This donation was part of the proceeds from the SummerFest refreshment tent Yeti cooler raffle.

Another recipient of the raffle proceeds, Karen Gasperosky from Sleep in Heavenly Peace, joined us to accept a check. She shared her heartfelt thanks, mentioning that the funds will go towards materials for their next bed build. There is currently a waiting list of 1,400 children in need of beds, and the next major build is scheduled for September 14 at Flushing Presbyterian Church. Above is a picture of both Karens and Cindy.

Volunteer Opportunities

President Cindy introduced Ed Danek, who spoke about volunteer opportunities at the upcoming Ally Challenge Golf event in mid-August. Volunteers are needed to shuttle golfers between airports and Warwick. This role comes with some perks and is a great way to support the community. For more information or to sign up, interested members can contact Ed at 248-981-6005. Ed and his wife, members of the Clarkston Optimist Club, emphasized the significant charitable contributions made through the Ally Challenge.

Upcoming Events

Cindy also invited members to join her at the CANUSA recognition dinner on Tuesday, July 23, at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Flint. This entertaining event is free and acknowledges the many sponsors and workers of the Flint Olympian and CANUSA Games. Members interested in attending should contact Cindy.

SummerFest Reflection and Planning

The meeting included a discussion about the recent Flushing SummerFest refreshment tent. Members shared what worked well, what could be improved, and brainstormed ideas for future events. These suggestions will be incorporated into the planning for next year’s event to ensure smoother execution and earlier completion of tasks.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions. We look forward to seeing more members at our next meeting and continuing to make a positive impact in our community.
