West Flint Optimist
14 members gathered at Liberty this morning for breakfast and were glad to have Tony Tucker join us, update us on his wife’s health, and talk about Old NewsBoys – anyone interested in getting a Christmas tree poster for donations (see above) can contact Tony. Old Newsboys will be on the streets this December 5 ( First Friday) with their paper sales, but they welcome donations year-round and have served 854,000 Genesee county youth (birth through high school) to date! Recent “Burtucky Days” generated $10K for the organization!
MEMBERS News/Announcements:
Karen Lorenc (Flushing Christian Outreach Center) oversaw a large Open House this past weekend that invited folks on tours of the operation and facilities, food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, balloon toys, DJ that took requests, dunk tank, silent auction, raffles, and more! (See photos below. BTW, Pit Boss served smoked pork nachos that are delicious, plentiful, and messy, especially with Mango Habanero sauce!)
Dan Crannie and Tim Sullivan continue recovering from their surgeries but are not yet up to attending, and Pete Venos (former long-term member) is now back in the area, residing at Abbey Park in Grand Blanc and welcoming visitors.( He recognized Mic Goulet and discussed several old friends and Club activities with Mic. The possibility of a group visit/lunch is under consideration.)
Phil Holmblade is again Optimist International Foundation representative for the Club and passed out “Dime-A-Day” requests to us to encourage additional support from the Club for the OIF causes/charities. (He will print more for those who didn’t get one today, or you can click on the link in this passage.)
Jeff Dennings and Greg Hilliker wanted folks to know about this weekend’s “Humanity in Harmony Music Festival” concert.
This afternoon will see an “alternatively-scheduled” Stammtisch at Barley & Vine at 3:30 p.m. for anyone interested. (late edit: 5 attended)
Several Club members are on deck for this morning to deliver/assemble beds (10) for Sleep in Heavenly Peace after breakfast (see pix below). Jeff Gauger notes that this brings the total for our local chapter to over 800 in the past 4 years!
Fines: “King” Mic Goulet fined Jeff Dennings for failure to shake hands with all members and made some reference about “lamely sidestepping responsibility” to which Jeff took umbrage; Steve Schlott for “whining”, and Cindy Sullivan for becoming “just another butt in a seat”. Steve proposed a fine against Joe Cozart for failing to have a bigger pumpkin in his yard.
Joe hoped to get enough money to finance the new pumpkin and thought he had a chance when he drew the “lucky number” but could not follow through to grab the Queen of Diamonds for the $111 currently in the “50/50 Progressive Pot”.
UPCOMING SPEAKERS:
Ashley Bond, new CEO of Boys & Girls Club, is scheduled to be our speaker for next week, October 23, thanks to Steve Schlott.
Scott Bennett, Grand Blanc Township Supervisor, will be coming to speak with us on October 30 about the recent tragic event in his jurisdiction (assault and fire at LDS church) arranged by Joe Farah.
Until next time, “Promise Yourself…”
