WEST FLINT OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER – April 9, 2026

April 9, 2026

13 members gathered for breakfast and conversation this morning, with a possible new member initiation in mind but temporarily postponed. (Alas, no new King!) Related to this, Matt Strnad was fined for being “all dressed up with no place to go”, and left the restaurant early. (Causal relationship between financial setback for this banker and his departure NOT assumed.)

Jack Proffitt gave the invocation and Jack Medemar’s gleeful collection of fines proceeded as usual, as did Jeff Dennings’ kibbitzing, but President Rich Lewis’s accurate rendering of fines was remarkable this week and impressed us all!

Joe Cozart bragged about fishing out his front door after all the rain we have had, but  he did not display any illegal catch!)

Cindy Sullivan returned from Tennessee for one day (not really just to sell tickets at the meeting, but she did step in for Mic Goulet in that capacity this morning) and leaves to go back for granddaughters’ volleyball tournaments. She initiated a rather interesting discussion on the management of returnable cans/bottles at the northerly table, which was fined for its conversation that made the south table envious. She and Rich Lewis will begin soliciting donors (and are requesting Club participation) for the coming Summerfest, what with set-up on June 10, takedown on June 14, and selling, serving, cleanup, and monitoring during the intervening days. (Jim Reigle was especially excited about collecting pull-tabs from the cans for Jeff Gauger’s support of the Ronald McDonald House.)

Greg Hilliker updated folks on his wife’s health concerns and status, and Steve Schlott sent around a card for her for Club signatures. (Steve’s characteristic compassion was somewhat offset by the fine that he levied “against anyone aimlessly wandering the aisles of Menard’s to get away from his sisters-in-law”, having seen Greg at that location.)

Bill Reaves is looking forward to his sister being in the area during the Summerfest period and will be trying to get her to speak with the Club.

Scott Stanley thanked members for their consideration and support regarding his mother’s recent passing. He continues to put in extra effort at work because of missing employees but is managing well. He drew the “lucky” ticket for the “50/50 Progressive Pot” of nearly $1000, but could not find the Queen of Diamonds to win.

Afternoon “Stammtisch” will be at 3:30 p.m. at Madison’s on Main today and all are welcome.

Sheila Gafney (daughter of former “hero” member Charlie Gafney) will be speaking about Special Olympics on April 30, thanks to Mic Goulet.

Until next time,  “Promise Yourself…”
