Newsletter – August 6, 2026

August 12, 2026

We had 17 members in attendance this morning, and Matt Strnad brought in his eldest son, Christopher, as a guest (and compensation for a trip to the dentist!).

Steve Schlott reminded us that CANUSA Games will be having their closing breakfast this Sunday at 9:00 a.m.(and supported by our Club’s donation) at Powers Catholic High School. (He is shown in above photo demonstrating close ties between CANUSA & Optimists, and another shot at closing ceremonies is seen below.)

Steve also circulated a “get well & good wishes” card for signatures and to be sent to Member Bill Hentgen, who is dealing with some health issues.

Whaley Children’s Center will be having its annual CARS 108 Roof Sit” on August 26-28 and our Club has received a request for Club support for this event. (See last week’s newsletter for a copy of the email sent to Cindy Sullivan.)

October 1 is the start of the new Optimist year, so we still have opportunities to boost membership and Club Honor status, and we also need to think about succession. The official Presidential Installation Banquet is being discussed ; more info at a later date.

Fines today started with Cindy and Matt fining each other (one more effectively than the other, given the current possession of the “The Crown”) for “mini-me” promotion. Matt’s son’s presence prompted Jeff Dennings to attempt a fine for having “Mini-Matt”! Matt fined “those who came today thinking that this was a luau!” Several members wore “tropical” shirts today, although Joe Cozart tried to sidestep the fine by “mansplaining” Gilligan’s Island to those unfamiliar with the show (as if that show could even BE explained!).

Speaker schedule:

August 13 – Jerry Preston will be sharing information about the possible name change for Flint Township.

August 20 – Paul Rozycki will speak with us about politics -past, present, and future.

August 27 – Our own Member Deb Hawley will update us about St. Francis Prayer Center.

The “50/50 Progressive Pot” now stands at $302, since Matt’s son obediently drew his Dad’s “lucky” ticket but was so distracted by the architectural possibilities of the creamer containers that he could not locate the “Desirable Diamond Diva” card!

Until next time,  “Promise Yourself…”
