WEST FLINT OPTIMIST CLUB Newsletter – August 13, 2026

August 17, 2026

Jerry Preston came to talk about the Flint Township name change possibility, with some pros & cons discussed and a clear prospect of “Oak Hills” as the new name – because of its uniqueness, strong “brand” positivity, and absence of negative concomitants (tax increases, postal address change, and quick or costly changes in signage, uniforms, etc.) emphasized. A public ballot (on November 3, 2026) and the approval by a majority of Trustees would be required for any implementation. (Jerry is seen above, flanked by Dan Crannie on the left and President Rich Lewis on the right.)

The 15 attendees at today’s Liberty breakfast rose to recite the Pledge of Allegiance after Phil Holmblade was asked to start the Pledge. After Jack Proffitt said “Grace”,  we had

Announcements: Steve Schlott talked about CANUSA proceedings and glitches, and he noted communication is not as straightforward as it has beenin the past, now that CRIM Foundation is in complete charge of the activities. Traci Pigott, now in charge of CANUSA at CRIM, is going to be with us as speaker on September 3, thanks to Steve, and we hope to improve our discourse.

Jeff Dennings announced that only 4 Lions Game tickets are not spoken for, and opening day is imminent.

Phil Holmblade reminded us again that Ally Challenge is 2 weeks away and volunteer opportunities are still available, if you would like to see the pros play better than you do!

Other “Stuff”: Phil was fined for bragging that “I’m a Marshall!” but failing to show a badge – or even do a good James Arness or even Dennis Weaver impersonation!

Jeff Dennings attempted to fine Phil for saying , “Sure” when Phil was asked to start the Pledge but Greg Hilliker noted that he actually said, “Certainly”, changing the fine target to himself for being “Mr. Corrector”! (Surprisingly, both fines failed!)

Jim Reigle paid a fine for carrying around “antiques”, after bringing in an old “Yellow Pages” edition.

John Drumm paid a fine for “bragging about his Hawaiian shirt collection.”

Steve paid one one for commenting on Cherry Givens’ “regularity”, and Cherry paid one for attending what she thought to be a luncheon meeting.

Dan Crannie was fined for being disappointed that “Crannieville” was not likely to be the name of the (former) Flint Township, but he was quite excited about the prospects of new signage in the area!

S&K Hometown Pub in Swartz Creek is the announced Stammtisch site for this afternoon at 3:30.
