January 25, 2024

We had a nice crowd this morning, thirteen of us, to liven things early in the morning.  Would someone please give Joe Farah official notice of the start time of the meeting?  Joe apologized for coming in at 8:05 for an 8:00 AM meeting, and asked when the time changed to starting at 7:30—of course he did this in private, likely to avoid a fine for both tardiness and seeming to not know the proper protocol.

Mike Butts rejoined us after his recent health related absence and he seems to be doing quite well.

“Queen Natalie” Fox continues to benevolently reign in her (purchased) crown and sash.  Jeff Dennings warns that she may not be wearing that crown for much longer

Several items of “business” were discussed, among them:

  • Flushing SummerFest – Cindy Sullivan has arranged to again borrow the fencing from the Flushing Rotary.  Also covered:  maybe a larger tent and food, or at least snacks, preferably salty snacks, to generate revenue and drive sales of more thirst quenching beverages.
  • WFOC was one of only three clubs in the Michigan District to earn Honor Club distinction for this last Optimist year.  Congratulations to the Club and to Immediate Past President Bill Reaves.
  • Bill discussed a proposed SuperBowl “lottery”.  This would involve prizes AND would also be a fundraiser to help defray costs of WFOC attending the Optimist International convention in Niagara Falls this year.  Stay tuned.
  • Joe offered to host a SuperBowl watch party at his home, providing he gets the necessary minimum of guests to attend.  Let Joe know of your interest.
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace build day is Saturday, FEB 3 at Signs by Crannie.  Come one, come all!

Today’s Program:  Jim Reigle’s “travelogue”

Jim regaled us with tales of his recent visit “down under”. He was in Perth, Australia for about one month, visiting his daughter’s family.  He was very animated in sharing his impressions and experiences, all of which was both enlightening and entertaining.  KEY WORDS: Wombat, Kangaroo, Cricket, Sunscreen, Emu, Roundabouts, Heat and Humidity, 23 hour flight.  The photo above shows Jim in standard headwear for a Cricket match.
