April Kicks Off with Club Updates, Community Projects & Spring Surprises

West Flint Optimist Club – Meeting Recap for April 3, 2025

Twelve members gathered this past Thursday for another engaging and spirited West Flint Optimist Club meeting. Although Spring weather had its say—causing a last-minute change in our scheduled program—the room was full of optimism and energy.

Program Update: Whaley Children’s Center CEO Delayed by Spring Storm

Our featured speaker, Mindy Williams, CEO of Whaley Children’s Center and one of our very own members, was unfortunately grounded by a power line dropped across her driveway—another reminder that Michigan Spring doesn’t play around! Mindy sends her regards and promises to reschedule soon with updates on the great work happening at Whaley. In even better news, she confirmed that Whaley staff will once again assist us with the Flushing SummerFest refreshment tent. We’re grateful for their continued support!

SummerFest Planning: Call for Council Meeting Support

Club President Cindy Sullivan provided an update on SummerFest preparations. She encouraged any members who can attend to join her at the upcoming Flushing City Council meeting on Monday, April 14. It’s an important opportunity to finalize our sponsorship plans and ensure smooth execution of our club’s involvement in the festival and other community activities.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace: Building and Delivering Beds for Kids in Need

The Club continues its heartfelt support of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, with two big initiatives this month:

  • Build Day: Happening Saturday, April 12 at the Flushing Moose Lodge, starting at 9:00 a.m. Extra hands are always welcome. Special thanks to Jana Reed, who is working on bringing in youth volunteers to help with the build.
  • Bed Deliveries: Also taking place on April 3, members Jack Medemar, Jeff Gauger, and Steve Schlott stepped up to help deliver and assemble over 20 beds! These beds are part of the 100 built on February 15—and with this push, we’re close to getting nearly all of them into the homes that need them most. Amazing work, team!

Welcome Back, Bill Reaves!

Assistant (and colorfully dressed) Lieutenant Governor Bill Reaves made a vibrant return from his extended Hawaiian vacation. He updated us on Optimist news from around the Michigan District and reminded us why we appreciate his spirited presence.

Upcoming Programs You Won’t Want to Miss:

  • April 10: Flushing Mayor Ed Sullivan
  • April 17: Amber Miller, Interim CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Flint
  • April 24: Scott Raquepaw, mentor of Robotics Team 1506

Looking ahead to May, Mic Goulet is your Program Chair and still has an open slot. If you have suggestions, be sure to reach out—Joe Farah already has a couple of ideas he’ll be sharing soon.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting and at the many service opportunities ahead. Stay optimistic—and maybe pack an umbrella!
