Job Corps March 2025
March 20, 2025

Victoria, Monique & Denina (from Job Corps) with Jeff Gauger

11 members and 1 guest (Deb Hawley, soon-to-be- member from St. Francis House of Prayer?) enjoyed listening to the Job Corps folks talk about their “work-based learning”operation: Denina is the “learning coordinator”, Monique is the “training manager”, and Victoria is one of the students who has gone through two of the Job Corps sequences (Office Administration, and Carpentry) with an eye to becoming a site manager or construction supervisor in the future. She was poised and effective in her communications this morning, showing promise of her likely success, as the trio talked about their beautiful campus, housing 160 live-in students at present but capable of accommodating up to 307 (including single parents!) as the 16- to 24-year-olds work and receive a stipend for their 8:00a-3:30p workdays developing technical skills and credentials as well as demonstrating general work ethics (responsibility, punctuality, respect, communication, persistence, etc.). Job Corps residents have been very helpful in the Sleep in Heavenly Peace work that our Club strongly supports.

Jeff Dennings paid a fine for “nit-picking” after noting that the Pledge began before President Cindy Sullivan even finished speaking, and President Cindy paid another fine for allowing “3 different meetings” to occur simultaneously.

Jeff Gauger noted that our Club, Kettering’s students, and others managed to assemble 29 beds this past week for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which won an award this week for being “Service Organization of the Year” by the general Flint-area community. He also noted that a Lowe’s-sponsored “24-hour Build Day” event is planned for Charlotte, NC, in May and that he intends to be there with some other local volunteers to work “around-the-clock” (3 8-hr. shifts of workers) to build 5000 beds. (Our local chapter would receive 100 of them.)

Jeff G. also reported that his granddaughter had successful but lengthy (6a-6p) back surgery and that she is doing as well as can be expected at this point. She may have to get used to being 2” taller! (Thanks for prayers and support.)

Prez Cindy reported that the license is in hand for the Flushing SummerFest beverage tent, so now we shift to insurance certification and planning.

No one won the “Progressive 50/50 Pot” today, so it is now up to $470!

Until next time, “Promise Yourself…”
