West Flint Optimist Club
November 7, 2024

Welcome to our November meeting recap, where we reflect on a gathering filled with camaraderie, community service updates, and heartfelt remembrances. Though our group was slightly smaller than usual, the energy and passion for our shared mission was as strong as ever. Here’s a look back at what happened:

Remembering Our Friend, Mike Butts

Before our opening prayer, Jack Proffitt led us in a moment of silence for our dearly departed friend and member, Mike Butts. Mike’s impact on our club is felt deeply, especially through his dedication to “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” (SHP), a cause that has become central to our community efforts. In Mike’s memory, we circulated a card to send to his family and another card for the family of Tom Martinbianco, a former member of the Flint Breakfast Optimist Club. We extend our heartfelt condolences to both families.

We also send our sympathies to Jim Reigle and his family after the recent passing of Jim’s mother at age 95. Jim shared some warm and humorous stories about his mother’s unique spirit and independence. The club will be sending a card to express our support during this time.

Upcoming “Breakfast with Santa” – December 4

The much-anticipated Breakfast with Santa is set for Wednesday, December 4! Jack Proffitt, the event chair, reminded us that this year’s gift-giving budget is set at $30 per gift. Please check in with Jack if you haven’t yet signed up. This cherished tradition is an opportunity for us to spread joy, and we’re looking forward to bringing smiles to many young faces.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Update: Major Milestones and Ambitious Goals

Jeff Gauger brought us some exciting updates on our SHP chapter:

500th Bed Delivered! Last week, SHP delivered its 500th bed, with some local media coverage—watch out for it!

New Trailer Incoming: We’re expecting a brand-new trailer soon, which will be wrapped in SHP’s logo by Signs by Crannie. This will make storage and transportation of our bed-building tools far easier.

Bed Building Challenge: SHP is taking on an ambitious goal—to build 200 beds in a single day at the Dort Event Center. This large-scale event will require a strong volunteer presence and help from SHP chapters across Michigan.

Fundraising Success: Phil Holmblade and Karen Gasperosky sold nearly 4,000 tickets at last Saturday’s Flint Firebirds game, raising around $1,800 for SHP. We’re grateful to Phil, Karen, and everyone who supported this fundraising effort. More opportunities like this may be available, so stay tuned!

In related news, the Flint Firebirds are interested in auctioning off a pair of custom Adirondack chairs, with proceeds to benefit SHP. If you know of anyone who could help build these chairs, please reach out to Jeff.

Guest Speaker Alert: Sheriff Chris Swanson on December 19

Joe Farah is excited to announce that Sheriff Chris Swanson may be joining us on December 19. This is an excellent opportunity to bring along spouses, friends, and potential new members to hear from an inspiring community leader. Mark your calendars, and let’s show Sheriff Swanson a warm welcome!

Sweatshirts Delivered!

For those who ordered club sweatshirts, the wait is over! Jeff Dennings did a fantastic job coordinating the order, and several members received theirs today. If you haven’t picked yours up, please bring your $20 and reach out to Jeff. Didn’t order one but wish you had? Jeff can provide information for anyone still interested.

Next Week’s Program – Salvation Army

On November 14, we look forward to a presentation from Joy, a representative from the Salvation Army, courtesy of Michael Goulet. It promises to be an insightful talk, and we hope to see a great turnout. We will also find out our date for ringing bells.

Thank you to everyone for your continued dedication to our mission of “bringing out the best in kids” and serving our community. Until next time, let’s remember to Promise Yourself to make a positive difference every day.

Yours in Optimism,

The West Flint Optimist Club
