October 9, 2025

Today is the first Optimist Club breakfast called to order under the authority of newly installed President Rich Lewis, seen above trying desperately to hold onto his gavel. (He has a better grip on this than on on his recollection of fines proposed this morning, noting that outgoing President Cindy Sullivan had told him that this is the most difficult of his new responsibilities!)

Attendance below usual (9) has resulted from such events as Tim Sullivan‘s surgery yesterday (surgery “went well” and biopsy results will take a while longer), Dan Crannie‘s ongoing recovery from bypass surgery (one month out and recovering well but still does not have permission to drive).

Hi! It’s Ken Cullen responding to the emailed minutes from the last meeting!

Yes, I am dropping out of the club, but the idea that I want no contact with any of you is not true! I’ve developed many friends over the years through our club and cherish them all!

The reason I’m dropping out is because of my lack of physical ability to participate in any of the projects that the club does!

I love and appreciate all you guys and look forward to seeing you out and about!

The no contact thing was regarding my comment that I didn’t want another call reassuring me that I didn’t necessarily need to participate in projects to be a member!

Last time I dropped out, I got a call from Steve Schlott which convinced me that I should come back! Steve, I appreciate that call but I now know that what I’m doing is the right thing at this point in my life.

Love you all! Ken Cullen

Bill Hentgen, also absent this morning, may be busy celebrating his 80th birthday, and cards were circulated for Club signatures for Bill, Tim, and Dan.

New Prez Rich Lewis was fined for starting the “official” meeting before Phil Holmblade‘s arrival, and Steve Schlott attempted a fine against Jack Proffitt for concealment of Jack’s “Lt. Gov. and Asst. Gov.” status this year, but Steve ended up as the target of fines for his being in the dark about Jack’s disclosure.

Bill Reaves discussed changes in incentives and recognitions for Club membership recruitment, and possible names for consideration of members for our Club floated through the conversations. Bill noted that Flint Downtown Optimist Club has a gathering planned for 6:00 p.m. at Torch Bar & Grill on Oct. 23 and we are invited to meet with them.

Desire and possibilities for speakers for October is reiterated.

Possible Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed assembly next Thursday (before Jeff Gauger makes a trip to Iowa) is in the works.

Until next time, “Promise Yourself…”
