WEST FLINT OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER – March 5, 2026

March 9, 2026

Standing in for the absent President Rich Lewis, Jeff Dennings called the official breakfast gathering to order, asked Steve Schlott to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and Jack Proffitt to say grace before the meal, and asked for announcements:

“Queen” Cindy Sullivan talked about Summerfest plans (flyers and mailings in the works and tent already booked);

Steve, standing in for Jeff Gauger, gave the most recent information on Sleep in Heavenly Peace activities – he noted that 5 of our Club members participated in the “Build Day” at Member Dan  Crannie’s business location, where 62 new beds were “created” by 60-70 volunteers under Rotary Club sponsorship. These, when delivered and assembled, will put us very close to the symbolic number of 1000 kids resting in Sleep in Heavenly Peace beds since our chapter was created!

Steve, subbing in for March Program Chair Joe Cozart, also introduced our Guest Speaker, Flushing Mayor Ed Sullivan (see photo from official city site above), who impressed with his pirate” impersonation – he sported a functional eye patch (see photo below) and threw in some  practiced “ARRRGH!” interjections. His presentation largely focused on how his work history as a DPW employee, union negotiator, and local business owner has shaped and contributed to his current interests in managing new DPW physical location and facilities, wastewater treatment and disposal, and somewhat contentious disassembling/disposing of a local “landmark” – the “Smiley” water tower at 530 Sunnyside Drive, Flushing, MI 48433. (See HERE for related  photos and stories.) His familiarity with area folks and businesses invited and addressed several questions from our group.

Mic Goulet “sold”/”bought” “50/50 Progressive Pot” tickets for today’s $771 “prize”, but he mistakenly threw his own tickets (both parts) into the pot for the weekly drawing. When his ticket numbers were drawn (TWICE! – I can not imagine why!), he was allowed to draw from the cards left from last week. He picked up the King of Spades instead of the Queen of Diamonds and went  home without the winnings despite his machinations!  (All together now – “AWWW!”)

Until next time,  “Promise Yourself…”
